Just answer the question!
“Where from?”
If you have spent any time in Japan, you have heard this friendly but curt question. A Japanese person with very limited experience of the outside world is asking for your country of origin. Simple, yes?
This is a tough question for a hyphenate like myself. Do I say I’m from the Ottawa-Gatineau region of Canada because that’s where I grew up? Or do I answer that I’m a Roman-Catholic Filipino French-Canadian to establish my religious and patriotic loyalties?
“What job?”
Again, a tough call for a hyphenate. But here goes: I’m an educator-writer-graphic designer-singer-songwriter-event co-ordinator. But all that seems self-serving. Damn. Another hyphen. What does it really say about what I do?
I create opportunities for people to engage in collaborative play. Learn with students, jam with musicians, improvise with actors, joke with comedians, design brand campaigns with collaborators. In all these experiences, my goal is to lead with wonder and help you build confidence to best communicate the ideas that matter.
